The Thompson border security plan
Renew America ^ | November 1, 2007 | Doug Hagin

Posted on 11/03/2007 4:24:49 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Since Fred Thompson officially entered the presidential playoffs, I have been fascinated by some of the criticisms of him by the media, and even by some Conservatives. You know the main card played against Thompson has been the lazy card. Lazy? No, Thompson is laid back; he is not a rah-rah kind of person. Frankly, I enjoy that about him. I have worked with many rah-rah types and many laid-back types as well. Give me the steady, calm, laid back person any day.

Another criticism of Thompson has been that he has offered no specifics on any of his ideas. Well, we can lay that fallacy to rest now my friends. This past week Fred Thompson laid out his plans for securing the border. This is clearly one of the most important issues facing America and its next president. A look now, at the Thompson plan for getting illegal immigration under control.

The first point addressed in the Thompson plan is amnesty, or as, Thompson says, NO AMNESTY! Thompson nails the essence of why we should not even consider amnesty.

Amnesty undermines U.S. law and policy, rewards bad behavior, and is unfair to the millions of immigrants who follow the law and are awaiting legal entry into the United States.

There you go, simple and accurate, no baloney, no dancing around with verbal gymnastics or political correctness. This is the essence of Conservatism my friends. Amnesty is wrong; therefore, we must not consider it.

The second major point of Thompson's plan is attrition through enforcement. Reduce the number of illegal aliens through increased enforcement against unauthorized alien workers and their employers. Without illegal employment opportunities available, fewer illegal aliens will attempt to enter the country, and many of those illegally in the country now likely will return home. Self-deportation can also be maximized by stepping up the enforcement levels of other existing immigration laws. This course of action offers a reasonable alternative to the false choices currently proposed to deal with the 12 million or more aliens already in the U.S. illegally: either arrest and deport them all, or give them all amnesty.

Again, Thompson goes straight to the most essential point of the debate. Enforcing laws works, it is the quickest way to begin to face up to our illegal immigration crisis. Illegal immigrants are drawn here by jobs. If we work seriously to remove that attraction, the problem will, in part, begin to correct itself. Instead of falling into the tired old rhetoric of choosing mass deportations or blanket amnesty Thompson chooses to lead on this issue. Moreover, he does so with simple, common sense approaches. That is what America needs common sense leadership, not talking points.

To help with the attrition through enforcement approach, Thompson lays out plans to give our country the tools to achieve that goal.

Doubling ICE agents handling interior enforcement, increasing the Border Patrol to at least 25,000 agents, and increasing detention space to incarcerate illegal aliens we arrest rather than letting them go with a promise to show up later for legal proceedings against them.

Adding resources for the Department of Justice to prosecute alien smugglers, people involved in trafficking in false identification documents, and previously deported felons.

Maximizing efforts to prosecute and convict members of criminal alien gangs, such as MS-13 and affiliated gangs. These gangs have brought unusual levels of violence to more than 30 U.S. states and have also become very active in drug smuggling, gun smuggling, and alien smuggling.

Once again, my friends we do not see rhetoric here, we see a clear vision on how to fix the problem with an eye to protecting America first. Thompson is looking at our interests first instead of paying lip service to it. In this plan, Thompson illustrates his faith in America, and in the nation's ability to address the problem. As he has said, it is not a matter of "can" it is a matter of "will."

Now on to perhaps the most promising portion of Thompson's plan. Addressing "Sanctuary Cities," those cities which refuse to follow federal laws regarding illegal immigration.

End Sanctuary Cities by cutting off discretionary federal grant funds as appropriate to any community that, by law, ordinance, executive order, or other formal policy directs its public officials not to comply with the provisions of 8 USC 1373 and 8 USC 1644, which prohibit any state or local government from restricting in any way communications with the Department of Homeland Security regarding the immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of an alien in the United States.

Deny discretionary Federal education grants as appropriate to public universities that violate federal law by offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens without also offering identical benefits to United States citizens, regardless of whether or not they live in the state, as required by 8 USC 1623.

Deny discretionary Federal grants as appropriate to states and local governments that violate federal law by offering public benefits to illegal aliens, as prohibited by 8 USC 1621(a).

Can I get an amen? This is exactly the correct approach in dealing with cities that thumb their noses at our federal laws and our national sovereignty! Ultimately, the immigration debate comes down to one crucial question. Are we to be a sovereign nation or not? Clearly, Fred Thompson grasps this point. Instead of trying to appease the race mongers and cheap labor addicts Thompson is, again, looking at what is best for this nation.

This issue is not racial; it is about law, order, and America's sovereignty. Conservatives see this, and by golly all those Conservatives who have been looking for a leader that also understands better look at Fred Thompson. There is a lot more to Thompson's plan and it is all very promising. Anyone questioning my endorsement of Thompson should check out the entire plan at Thompson's campaign site. http://www.fred08.com/virtual/Immigration.aspx

Where is Rudy & Mitt's plans for stopping illegals? Both were sanctuary & amnesty men in the past.

I continue to be truly impressed by his stance on this. That he promoted it so publicly, that it has no wishy-washy BS, no apparent trojan horses or double-talk included in the language. I like Thompson but if he continues to handle himself this way on core issues, he’ll also have my full-blown support.

He’s saying exactly what I’ve been saying all along. Begin enforcing current law, both with illegals and their employers, and they will begin to return to Mexico (or wherever) of their own volition.

Now we have to get this out through the MSM so the public knows his views.

I really like Fred’s state’s rights, but I wonder what he thinks of Gore vs. Bush. Would he have voted for state’s rights in that case? I was listening to a Supreme Court Author of the NINE and he said that this case was for state’s rights. What is you opinion on that? I personally would hate for Fred to have voted in favor of Gore but he most certainly could have had he been on the Supreme Court.

States have rights except to violate citizens right to equal protection under the law. If Gore had demanded all votes in Florida be recounted over and over instead of just 3 counties he may have won the Presidency. Of course the Republican Legislature may have really got into it with the Florida Supreme Court.

I think Fred would have had to go with the Supreme COurt on this one.

This sounds very good to me.

Fred is using the magic word: alien. And that takes some courage these days. Fred also lays out a plan for self-deportation that does not involve police-state tactics and relies upon our legal tradition and existing laws.

Fred now moves up strongly on my list. I may be in a late primary but, given how this primary will work out, even late voters may be decisive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but neither Mitt nor Rudi have had the courage to use the proper and legal term (alien).

That’s good to hear. Also the three county thing is a bit sketchy. I wonder why he did not want the whole state counted. Well regardless thank God he did not win. He would have been awful at this time of our lives.

Pandering, flip-flopping, maybe. I couldn't describe anything those two do as "courage" or "political courage." So far Thompsom has shown both.

As much as I think it will be nigh on impossible to get them all, I damn well think Fred could get it done. At least make more of a dent than anyone else.

I trust him to solve this situation the best way possible for us and our future.

The States have NO SAY in a Federal Election... President... unlike Congress and the Senate... is a Federal Election position... States cannot regulate that election and that is why Florida was not allowed to break their own Constitutional Law to falsely elect gore.

Those ballots were counted and recounted by the msm and NEVER did gore win. How would he have won if his allies in the media could not even manufacture one instance of gore winning... and there were three different counts of these ballots... after the fact?

I don't expect anything else from Rudi, a liberal panderer.

Mitt may make himself irrelevant by lack of courage on speaking out on illegals, the merits of gun ownership for self-defense, etc.

Mitt is disappointing because, in many ways, he's such an excellent type of candidate, a great success in the business world, someone who could address the problems of debt and the entitlements explosion. But we need a candidate who can carry the fight to the Dims forcefully in our core Red states and draw in enough voters to have a chance with the indies and the Reagan Democrat types in Purple states.

Statements of real clarity like this one from Fred are what we need. Not overcooked and nuanced phrases.

We can make huge progress though. We could, for instance, pass laws at the federal level or allow the states to pass laws to allow illegal aliens to be sentenced to labor camps as a penalty. If they face forfeiture of assets in America and 2-5 years of life in an Arpaio tent city while working on a labor gang on our highways or picking crops, they'll disappear mighty fast. When their term is up, they will be deported and will have forfeited their chance at ever becoming legal immigrants.

This is the kind of policy that would make real changes.

After we do this, we need to ramp up our program for temporary legal labor including mandatory employer fines and granting temporary legal status for foreign workers to meet seasonal labor needs in agriculture.

Sending all these illegals home may be the best thing we could do with Mexico. Having seen what can be done in a country that isn't utterly corrupt, they could make real changes in Mexico by voting and changing that corrupt regime, finally creating a real Mexican middle class majority.

Mitt's "plans" are mega volumes of written objectives with no explanation of "HOW" a key element in any plan. Example, A Stronger Military. We must increase the size of our military by 100,000 troops. In addition, we should increase to at least four percent of our gross domestic product to defense. This kind of investment will make up for critical gaps in the modernization of our equipment, personnel and health care efforts. However, as we invest in our military, we must ensure that funds are used to address critical needs of the men and women of our Armed Forces, not political or contractor interests.

This Mitt at his best,"We must increase the size of our military by 100,000 troops. In addition, we should increase to at least four percent of our gross domestic product to defense." Never says HOW he will increase the size of our military, in fact he says "we" not "I will" then the increase of our GND, never says HOW. Now how many people in Mitt's camp can explain what GND means or how it is calculated and yet Mitt's minions say this a plan.

Mitt uses the word "invest" why does "invest" sound like Liberal speak?

Ah, like Hitlery has been so specific about her "changes" for America.

Now I understand.

There is no doubt that Fred is the only first tier candidate with a real plan on immigration. He appointed Kris Kobach as his advisor on immigration, which is why this plan is so good. It has Kobach’s fingerprints all over it.

Oh Gore wouldn't have won fair and square but the chances of Dade county discovering new ballots while Republicans were scattered all over the state supervising various recounts is not an unlikely scenario.

If we were not able to concentrate on those few counties and stop the fraud there is no telling what might have happened. Remember the Dems trying to sneak a bunch of ballots into a closed room to recount and Republicans had to almost beat the door down to supervise. I guarantee you that if the Dems had come up with 5 or six boxes that were mysteriously misplaced and rediscovered the Florida Court would have demanded they be counted. Remember Dino Rossi.
